HAIRDRESSING AT ALPHA 

NVQ LEVEL 1 

So, you have decided you would like to be a hairdresser? Get ahead of the game with an NVQ level 1 in hairdressing, a course especially suited to learners aged between 13 and 16. Level 1 is a fantastic introduction to hairdressing and a great way to build expertise and a background knowledge which will point you in the right direction to becoming a qualified hairdresser. 


NVQLevel 1 will suit you if you are new to the industry and have little or no experience of hairdressing and barbering or you are looking to be a Hairdressing Assistant. There is one qualification available at this level: Level 1 NVQ Certificate in Hairdressing and Barbering. You complete four mandatory units at Level 1 and a number of optional units.

Mandatory units are:

  • Make sure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety (HSS 1)
  • Contribute to the development of effective working relationships
  • Shampoo and condition hair
  • Prepare for hair services and maintain work areas

NVQ LEVEL 2 

If you are 16 and over, are passionate about hairdressing and would like to pursue a career as a hairdresser, then this could be the perfect course for you. Learn all fundamentals of hairdressing such as cutting hair, colouring and perming. At Alpha we work one to one with you ensuring that you qualify confidently as a hairdresser. Days and hours can be flexible to suit the individual and we will work around you to help you achieve your goals and ambitions. 


Level 2 will suit you if you have some experience in the Hairdressing and Barbering industry or you want to be a Junior Stylist.

There are three qualifications available at this level: Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Barbering Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing (Combined Hair Types).

Depending on the qualification you choose, you complete between six and nine mandatory units and a range of optional units.

Mandatory units include:

  • Make sure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety
  • Advise and consult with clients Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
  • Cut hair using basic techniques.

Optional units include:

  • Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work
  • Plait and twist hair
  • Fulfil salon reception duties
  • .

If you have already obtained a qualification in hairdressing and you would like to learn more advanced techniques, improve your confidence and develop your skills further, then this could be a perfect course for you. Alpha has trained many stylists over the years and have had great success in encouraging qualified students to secure hairdressing jobs in salons or in their own mobile business. Our lecturers will work one to one with you to ensure that you become the very best stylist that you can be.


Level 3 is ideal if you already have a Hairdressing or Barbering qualification and want to become a Senior Stylist.

There are three qualifications to choose from at this level: Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Barbering Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing (Combined Hair Types).

Depending on the qualification you choose, you complete four or more mandatory units and a number of optional units from a range.

Mandatory units include:

  • Monitor procedures to safely control work operations
  • Provide hairdressing consultation services
  • Creatively cut hair using a combination of techniques.

Optional units include:

  • Colour hair using a variety of techniques
  • Contribute to the financial effectiveness of the business
  • Contribute to the planning and implementation of promotional activities.
